Come along on this beginner watercolour class at Rudyard Lake Staffordshire. The hidden gem of Staffordshire Moorlands with its fabulous views across the lake and some of the most dramatic scenery in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The lake is over 2.5 miles long, with beautiful woodland walks, fresh air and just the sound of the waves lapping against the boats and along the shore.
This day retreat is open to all adults wishing to learn to paint with both watercolour and other media and discover the joy of painting small detailed pieces. The day is split into two, painting small in the morning and a larger painting in the afternoon. Learn the basics from simply holding the brush, mixing paint to quickly moving with experimental techniques with different products you can use on a larger piece of work in the afternoon. With lots of freedom to move at your own pace with no pressure and create your own unique piece of work.
A lovely watercolour experience day if you have never painted with watercolour. Plenty of encouragement, feel inspired to be brave with "playing with colour" and revisit when you were a child and felt free to just create without judgement.
An example of how the day is planned....
9.30am Arrival refreshments 10.00am - 12.30pm
The day starts with refreshments. We then move on to experimental painting techniques. With an introduction to simple painting techniques and using additional products for texture effects. Create a simple piece of art (or two) in it's miniature form. it is quite surprising how long it takes to paint something small.
12.30pm Buffet lunch including freshly baked cakes all prepared that morning by the tearoom on site.
1.30pm Building on from the morning we will create our unique larger piece of art inspired by our surroundings.
4.00pm Approximate finish.
Included: All day tea and coffee, lunch and all art materials
*Note - Timings are flexible to accommodate the speed at which people work.
MATERIALS All materials that you need for the day will be provided but please wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint on them. You are welcome to bring extra materials to use on your painting if you wish.
VENUE The retreat takes place upstairs at the activity centre at Rudyard Lake Staffordshire. However, there is a also a lift should you require it, suitable for wheelchair users.

Alexandra Doherty –
“Wow Joan’s art retreat was a blast! Lovely people and a great teacher. I’ve been once before as a birthday treat and this was my second time I will 100% be returning. I’ve told a couple of friends how great it was and we are planning on coming together in march. With Joan’s classes she doesn’t do “step by step” but instead teaches you techniques which enables you to go away and paint freely with the skills you have learnt. Highly recommend!!!”
Date of experience: October 21, 2023
